Unai Emery stated that Aston Villa are “not really” in contention for the Premier League title, instead focusing on a battle for a top-four position after substitute Ollie Watkins scored twice to secure a 2-1 victory against Chelsea. This win brought Villa within three points of league leaders Arsenal.

The triumph against Chelsea marked Aston Villa’s eleventh consecutive win across all competitions, matching their best-ever run set in 1914. Additionally, they are just one victory away from equaling their record of nine successive league wins, which dates back to 1910.

As Villa prepares to face Arsenal at the Emirates on Tuesday, a win would allow them to level with the Gunners. However, despite nearing the top of the table, Emery downplayed the club’s title aspirations.

“Not really,” Emery responded when asked if he believed Villa could secure the title. “I feel that we are competing for a spot in Europe, not in the title race against Manchester City and Arsenal. We have played 18 matches and have 20 remaining. We need to compete with teams like Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United, and maintain consistency throughout the 38-match season.”

Last season, Villa drew against Arsenal at the Emirates but secured a 2-0 victory earlier this season. They also defeated the Gunners 2-1 at Villa Park this month. Despite these positive results, Emery regards Arteta’s side as the favorites for the upcoming match.

“The match against Arsenal is very, very difficult,” Emery acknowledged. “At the Emirates, they are exceptionally strong. This next challenge is the most significant we will face, as they are currently the best team in the Premier League and the Champions League.

“However, we have talented players, and I aim to set high demands for our performance. Each match presents a challenge, and playing away adds to that difficulty. On Tuesday, facing Arsenal will undoubtedly be tough, but we will approach the game with our own personality and mentality. Naturally, they are favored to win against us.”
