Following an emotional farewell to Aston Villa’s supporters, Emiliano Martinez’s anticipated transfer to Manchester United did not materialize. The Red Devils chose to sign Senne Lammens on deadline day, leaving many to speculate about Martinez’s fit for the club, especially given their urgent need to replace out-of-form goalkeeper Andre Onana. During the transfer window, rumors circulated regarding a potential loan move for Jadon Sancho to Villa Park, which could have facilitated Martinez’s departure to Old Trafford. Ultimately, however, Villa manager Ruben Amorim opted for the £18 million-rated Lammens instead. Shay Given, the former Newcastle United, Manchester City, and Aston Villa goalkeeper, shared his insights on Martinez’s failed transfer, stating during an interview with 10bet: “It felt very close during the recent window, especially with him not participating in Villa’s squad on deadline day. Many assumed he was bound for Manchester United, but that did not occur. He has since returned as Villa’s number one and is performing admirably. I wonder if the opportunity for a summer move has passed, especially with Lammens now in the picture. This may have been a once-in-a-lifetime chance for Emi that has slipped away. “Unless Emi Martinez considers a move abroad, he has achieved remarkable success with both club and country, notably winning the World Cup. His heroics in that final remain the stuff of dreams. Martinez is a celebrated figure in Argentina and possesses a compelling personality. However, given his age, teams may look for younger options starting next year, but he remains a top-tier goalkeeper in my view.” Mick Brown, a former chief scout for Manchester United, has encouraged the club to revisit their interest in the seasoned Argentine goalkeeper, as he noted in an interview with Football Insider: “They sought his services, and he was keen on the move, but an agreement with Villa could not be reached, leading to the deal’s collapse. While they have acquired Lammens, Amorim has indicated a continued desire for a goalkeeper, prompting their recruitment team to explore options. “I have no doubt that Martinez remains a viable candidate due to his elite goalkeeping skills, which would immediately address their current issues. He is strong, imposing, a superb shot-stopper, and possesses the character that seems to be lacking in the Manchester United dressing room. It wouldn’t surprise me at all to see them pursue him again, whether in January or next summer.” Since his arrival in England, Lammens has played five Premier League matches, conceding seven goals. He was pivotal in Amorim’s side achieving three consecutive victories in October against Sunderland, Liverpool, and Brighton and has drawn comparisons to legendary Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. However, Lammens has humbly dismissed such comparisons in an interview with BBC Sport, stating: “I don’t pay much attention to it during games, but I saw it afterwards. I am not Schmeichel in disguise; I am simply Senne Lammens trying to assist the team. It’s an incredible compliment, but one must remain realistic. He is among the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and I have much to prove before being mentioned in the same breath as him.” Post navigation Bellingham and Madrid Seek Redemption After Recent Struggles PSG’s Thrilling Victory Highlights Tactical Evolution and Future Aspirations
