Chelsea winger Estêvão revealed that he adhered to team instructions when allowing his teammate Lucas Paquetá to take Brazil’s second penalty during Tuesday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Tunisia.

The 18-year-old had successfully converted a penalty in the 44th minute, equalizing the score at 1-1 in Lille, France. However, when Brazil was awarded another penalty in the 77th minute, coach Carlo Ancelotti opted for Paquetá to take the shot instead of Estêvão. Unfortunately, Paquetá’s attempt sailed over the crossbar.

“It was an order that came down,” Estêvão commented. “I genuinely wanted to take the penalty, but I supported my teammate so he could score. Sadly, he missed. We need to keep our heads high; we must train and improve because, in a World Cup, we have to capitalize on these opportunities.”

Ancelotti elaborated on his decision-making process regarding the penalty taker. “For the second penalty, I switched the taker to alleviate some of the pressure off Estêvão, so I chose Paquetá, who typically converts well,” he explained after the match.

Paquetá expressed his regret over the missed opportunity, stating, “I apologize for the missed penalty. It saddens me. We would likely have won had I scored. I’m accustomed to converting at my club; my past successes should have given me confidence. Unfortunately, my eagerness to score led me to make a decision too quickly before that final touch. I will work to improve and ensure I convert the next opportunity to assist the team.”

Although Brazil concluded the year without a victory, Estêvão chose to focus on the positives. Having transferred from Palmeiras to Chelsea for £29 million ($38.6 million) in the summer, he has quickly adapted to the challenges of the Premier League.

“This has been a very special year for me,” he remarked. “I haven’t encountered many ups and downs, but I’ve managed all that has come my way. Being here with the national team signifies that my efforts at club and home have been fruitful, and I am proud to represent my country. I am always here to contribute, and I take great happiness in that.”
