Brian Sorensen assumed the role of head coach for Everton in April 2022.

Everton has decided to part ways with manager Brian Sorensen, mere days after achieving their inaugural home victory of the Women’s Super League season.

Currently sitting fourth from the bottom of the league standings, Sorensen’s tenure, which began in 2022, has come under scrutiny.

“Sunday’s win at Goodison Park was significant, but it has become clear that a change in direction is essential for the on-field progression we all aspire to,” stated Everton CEO Angus Kinnear.

In addition to Sorensen, coaches Stephen Neligan and Ashley Toole have also left the club. Everton Under-18s coach Scott Phelan, aged 37, will now oversee the women’s team for the remainder of the season.

First-team coach Jennifer Foster and goalkeeping coach Ian McCaldon will continue at the club to support Phelan during this transition.

Everton secured a 2-1 comeback victory against Aston Villa on Sunday, thanks to two goals from Martina Fernandez, including a decisive strike in the 89th minute. This win propelled them four points ahead of the bottom-placed Liverpool.

The timing of Everton’s decision is unexpected, coming just hours after the transfer window closed, during which they acquired Roma midfielder Zara Kramzar. Sorensen had been involved in the club’s recruitment efforts, and many recent signings were made in alignment with his preferences.

However, the sentiment that a change was necessary has been present at Everton for several months. Supporters have voiced growing frustration over the team’s performances, as Sorensen appeared uncertain about his ideal starting lineup and frequently utilized players in unconventional roles.

While his experimental approach has yielded results in the past, he deserves recognition for his management during a challenging season last year when injuries left the squad depleted amid the anticipation of the Friedkin Group’s takeover.

Expectations have heightened this season following new investments and signings, as the squad possesses sufficient quality to contend for higher league positions.

Unfortunately, the team has found itself embroiled in an unwarranted relegation battle, prompting Everton to act swiftly to stabilize their standing prior to a rebuilding phase in the summer.

Sorensen’s overall tenure at Everton has demonstrated his coaching abilities, but the lack of a consistent lineup has adversely affected his progress.
