FC Augsburg Signs Striker Thomas Kastanaras from StuttgartFC Augsburg Signs Striker Thomas Kastanaras from Stuttgart

In an unexpected development on transfer deadline day, FC Augsburg has signed Thomas Kastanaras, a reserve striker from Stuttgart. The 23-year-old is typically categorized as a lower league player, with a market value estimated at €300,000. He would have been available on a free transfer due to his contract expiring at the end of the season.

Kastanaras has been unable to play for VfB II in the 3. Liga due to knee surgery he underwent over the summer. Although he has scored a commendable total of 10 goals in the 3. Liga, he has not played any minutes in the Bundesliga since making four appearances under coaches Pellegrino Matarazzo and Bruno Labbadia during the 2022/23 season.

Current VfB head coach Sebastian Hoeneß has not called upon Kastanaras and has included him in the matchday squad only twice throughout his tenure. Despite this, both Augsburg and Stuttgart released statements praising the player following the unexpected transfer.

“We were determined to sign Thomas,” remarked Augsburg sporting director Benni Weber in a club statement. “He possesses a wealth of untapped potential that has yet to be showcased, and we are confident he will soon be prepared for the next step in his career.”

Stephan Hildebrandt, the VfB academy director, added, “Thomas is a versatile and ambitious striker. After 13 years with Stuttgart, he has established himself as a strong and respected personality. We will be closely monitoring his progress and wish him all the best.”

Kastanaras himself expressed gratitude, stating, “I owe a lot to VfB. It will always be my club. I began my journey here as a young boy and realized my dream of becoming a Bundesliga player. After six months out due to injury, I am back in top form and eager to meet my new teammates and achieve success together.”
