Feyenoord made significant progress on Sunday afternoon with a hard-fought 0-1 victory against FC Utrecht in a match that lacked excitement. The Rotterdam club saw Ajax play to a draw against AZ, allowing Feyenoord to retain second place, although NEC could surpass them with a win over FC Utrecht. Nonetheless, Mikos Gouka believes that Feyenoord, like Ajax, is unlikely to be threatened by NEC in the long run.

In the football podcast hosted by Algemeen Dagblad, Gouka expressed that Feyenoord may have benefitted from favorable circumstances against Utrecht. “I felt Feyenoord was stronger in the first half, but ultimately, one could argue that Utrecht—despite their poor performance—had the better chances. Based on that, a draw might have been a fair result, but Feyenoord held onto their 0-1 lead without conceding much.”

Despite this, Gouka suggests that the victory could signify the onset of a series of positive results for Feyenoord. “This could be the start of a streak with better outcomes. At this stage, the manner of the win is less important than simply accumulating points. The players themselves acknowledged this after the match. Notably, if you look around, Ajax is falling behind, and clubs like Sparta are not closing the gap. This situation would have been different had Feyenoord lost to Utrecht.”

In the race for second place, Feyenoord faces competition from Ajax, while NEC currently has a slight edge. However, Gouka remains confident that NEC will not pose a lasting threat to the two Dutch top clubs. “Lately, things have been going in NEC’s favor, but they must maintain this form for the next 12 matches. While it’s possible, there’s a sense that their luck could turn at any moment.”
