Feyenoord’s Bold Move: Raheem Sterling Transfer Under Scrutiny

However, former coach Willem van Hanegem advises caution, suggesting that the impact of Sterling remains to be seen. He believes it would be concerning for the Eredivisie if Sterling, a player who hasn’t competed since May 2025, makes a significant difference in matches.

In his column for Algemeen Dagblad, Van Hanegem notes that Feyenoord seems to be straying from its original objectives. “At the start of the season, Feyenoord had bold plans for attacking football, emphasizing youth development and favoring a 4-3 win over a 1-0 outcome, avoiding time-wasting tactics. Now, the main takeaway after matches is simply that they won, and they still hold second place, but little else has materialized. Help is reportedly on the way.”

Van Hanegem finds it absurd that the club is even going abroad for training. “They are going on a training camp in Brussels so Sterling can start training with the team for a few days. This has everyone excited, even Robin van Persie was seen smiling again. However, if a player, who last played in May 2025, can make a difference here, it raises questions about the level of the Eredivisie.”
