Feyenoord’s Investment in Sem Steijn: A Complex Situation

omidbasir- Feyenoord invested €11 million in Sem Steijn from FC Twente during the last summer transfer window, with the possibility of an additional €2 million in bonuses. However, the midfielder has not secured a consistent place in the starting lineup at De Kuip.

Expectations were high following this record transfer for the Rotterdam club, culminating in coach Robin van Persie appointing Steijn as captain. Unfortunately, by the winter break, he had to relinquish the captaincy, and his playing time has since decreased.

If general director Dennis te Kloese decides to make personnel changes, Steijn may easily become a target, especially if there is a need to generate funds. Importantly, Feyenoord can potentially sell Steijn without incurring a loss. In fact, there is a significant chance that the club could profit from their record acquisition if he is sold in July or August. Upon his transfer from Enschede to Rotterdam, Steijn had a market value of €16 million, making him, rather surprisingly, a bargain at the time. Currently, his estimated value is around €14 million, which, given the dynamics of the transfer market, is likely the minimum expected selling price.
