Feyenoord’s return from the winter break has not been favorable, concluding with a 2-2 draw against Heerenveen. The team’s position at the top of the league is now significantly out of reach, with fierce rival Ajax trailing closely behind, just three points away. This performance has led to increasing dissatisfaction among supporters, raising questions about the future of coach Robin van Persie, whose position has come under scrutiny. Interestingly, technical director Robert Maaskant is considering extending van Persie’s contract.

In a recent podcast episode of FC Rijnmond, Maaskant acknowledged the eroding support for van Persie, stating, “He has generally received backing from national media and the fans, but this support is beginning to wane. If internal discussions revolve around complacency, that presents a real issue. If, after this series of matches, we cannot pinpoint the core problems and chart a clear path forward, then it risks becoming a cycle of mutual self-congratulation within the club.”

Feyenoord observer Dennis Krakenburg emphasized the need for technical director Dennis te Kloese to engage with the public. “The training camp would have been an ideal opportunity for him to speak, but he was absent in Spain. Next week’s New Year’s reception will be another chance for us to hopefully hear from him.”

Maaskant has proposed an unconventional yet bold suggestion: extending van Persie’s contract with Feyenoord. “I would find it commendable for the club to go against prevailing opinions and affirm our commitment to Robin van Persie. He is a club icon who is still developing as a coach. We have made a conscious choice to support him, and we should extend his contract, affirming that he is our leader for the next five years as we aim to restore Feyenoord’s former glory.”
