Flick Emphasizes Commitment Amidst Player Departures at BarcelonaFlick Emphasizes Commitment Amidst Player Departures at Barcelona

Hansi Flick indicated that Marcus Rashford’s desire to join Barcelona should serve as a lesson for the club’s young players, especially following Dro Fernández’s recent announcement of his intention to leave the club this January.

Fernández, an 18-year-old talent, informed Barcelona this week of his decision to activate his €6 million ($7 million) release clause, prompting interest from clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Manchester City, and Chelsea, as reported by ESPN. The news surprised Barcelona, with Coach Flick expressing particular disappointment after recently integrating Fernández into the first team and allowing him to make his LaLiga and Champions League debuts this season.

During a press conference on Saturday, Flick initially refrained from commenting on Fernández’s situation until his departure was finalized, but he strongly hinted at it when asked about the possibility of signing Rashford permanently from Manchester United next summer. “Marcus’ performances have been exceptional so far, and while we must manage this situation, it is ultimately [sporting director] Deco’s responsibility to plan for the upcoming season,” Flick stated.

He continued, “We still have months ahead of us. With Marcus, we have a top-level player. What I greatly appreciate is his desire to be a part of this club. This is the message I want to convey to the young players from La Masia: We are Barça, one of the best teams in the world. We provide the opportunity to train alongside the best players, offering support and confidence. If you wish to play for Barça, it must be with your entire heart. This is my message: 100%. You must live for these colors. For those who don’t, I have no interest.”

Flick appeared to contain his thoughts when addressing questions about Fernández, who has drawn comparisons to Thiago Alcantara and Pedri, yet he acknowledged the influence of those around the young player on his decisions. He remarked, “As I mentioned before regarding Dro, I will not comment until things are finalized, but this is football. Sometimes, one may disagree with a player’s choices; however, at 18, they are mature enough to make decisions and have people advising them. Of course, when I see certain actions… no, I prefer not to elaborate further.”

Although Fernández’s next destination remains unconfirmed, sources indicate that PSG is now favorably positioned to secure his signing, bolstered by Coach Luis Enrique’s established relationship with the player’s agent, Ivan de la Peña.

In addition, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen is expected to depart Barça this month, with reports suggesting he is close to a loan move to LaLiga side Girona for regular playing time leading up to the World Cup. Flick remarked, “This is Marc’s decision. He understands his desires for the future. We have discussed this extensively in recent days and weeks, and regardless of whether on loan, he remains a Barça player and our captain. He is an icon of this club and a significant figure over the last decade. We respect his wishes.”

Flick also expressed hope that midfielder Marc Bernal would remain with Barcelona, following reports that the club might allow him to be loaned out after recovering from a long-term injury. “I hope he stays,” Flick stated. “My stance is clear, but in football, uncertainties abound. From my perspective, he stays with us. He has returned from a serious injury and is adapting and improving. We want to support him in reaching his potential and beyond.”

As LaLiga leaders, Barcelona are set to return to action on Sunday against Real Sociedad, who have been unbeaten in their last three matches since hiring American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo. Flick commented, “They have gained confidence from two wins and a draw. I know the coach well, as we lived near each other in Germany. I look forward to facing him tomorrow. It will be a challenging match, with their talented players riding high on recent performances. Nevertheless, our objective is clear: we aim to win LaLiga and secure a victory tomorrow.”
