Barcelona’s head coach, Hansi Flick, has remarked on the significant improvement in Lamine Yamal’s discipline as he navigates an ongoing groin issue. The 18-year-old winger had previously missed seven matches for both club and country due to a persistent pubalgia condition, which causes chronic pain in the groin area. However, he has recently started in Barcelona’s last five matches while managing the injury. During Wednesday’s 3-3 draw against Club Brugge in the Champions League, Yamal showcased his potential by scoring one goal and providing an assist, indicating he is approaching his optimal performance level. Flick attributes this resurgence to Yamal’s increased attention to detail in training and treatment. “We need to be cautious with him,” Flick stated in a press conference ahead of Sunday’s La Liga match against Celta Vigo. “He has improved his discipline significantly. His training has been excellent, and he is consistently undergoing treatment. “It’s crucial for his recovery to maintain this routine. I believe he is getting closer to his best form, but we must remain vigilant as the injury is not completely resolved.” Despite his struggles, Yamal has contributed five goals and five assists in ten appearances for Barcelona this season and will join the Spanish national team following the game in Vigo. It was with the national squad that he initially sustained the groin injury, which led to tensions between the club and the team. Flick hopes the national coaches will manage his playing time wisely as Spain aims to secure a spot in next summer’s World Cup with upcoming matches against Georgia and Turkey. “We must look after him, but this responsibility also extends to the national team,” Flick added. Yamal’s return to form is seen as critical for Barcelona as they seek to regain their momentum, having only won three out of their last seven matches across all competitions. Flick attributed the team’s recent struggles, particularly the disappointing draw in Belgium, to a perceived lack of intensity and expects more from his players against a strong Celta side at Balaídos this weekend. “It is a fact that we have numerous key players sidelined due to injuries, which is significantly impacting our performance,” he noted. “As we approach November, we must remain focused until May, and I understand the need for improved performances. Once our players return to fitness, I believe they can significantly contribute to our success. “This match is a crucial starting point for us. However, we need to demonstrate the fight and determination that was lacking in our last game. I hope we display that spirit this time.” Flick also mentioned the absences of key players such as Raphinha, Pedri, Gavi, and Joan García, who will not participate against Celta. He confirmed that defender Jules Koundé is doubtful after withdrawing from training, while Eric García will be available to play despite a broken nose, as he can utilize a protective mask. Barcelona is in urgent need of a victory in Vigo to stay competitive with La Liga leaders Real Madrid, who currently hold a five-point advantage. Celta, meanwhile, will be looking to extend their positive form and move into the upper half of the table. “Celta is in excellent form, having won their last four matches, which places them in a better position than we are in presently,” Flick acknowledged. “However, our success depends on our attitude and mentality. This morning, we stressed the importance of driving forward with the intent to win. It is crucial to enter the international break with three additional points, and that is our objective for Sunday.” Post navigation Exciting Domestic Matches Ahead of International Break Ramon’s Promising Journey in Serie A and Aspirations for Real Madrid
