According to talkSPORT,

Fulham’s management is seriously contemplating the departure of head coach Marco Silva as fears of relegation loom and contract negotiations remain unresolved. Eleven matches into the Premier League season, Fulham’s leading scorer is not one of their own players, but rather the result of own goals from opposing teams. While Harry Wilson and Ryan Sessegnon have each contributed two goals, the team has benefitted from three own goals as well. Their away form has been lackluster, managing to secure only one point on the road this season, courtesy of a late equalizer from Rodrigo Muniz against Brighton. All three of their victories have taken place at Craven Cottage, where they have relied heavily on fortunate own goals.

Tensions have been escalating behind the scenes for several months. Silva, who has a £15 million ($20 million) release clause, has thus far declined to sign a new contract, placing Fulham in a precarious situation. His current contract expires next summer, which would allow him to leave as a free agent. As reported by GMS, Fulham’s board, led by vice-chairman Tony Khan, has been eager to secure Silva’s commitment since July. However, negotiations have stalled, with the manager expressing frustration over the club’s perceived lack of ambition in the transfer market. Fulham’s only significant signing last summer was Kevin, a Brazilian winger from Shakhtar Donetsk, acquired for approximately £34.6 million ($45.5 million). For a team aiming to achieve mid-table stability, this was insufficient.

In August, Silva candidly shared his disappointment, stating, “It’s not an ideal scenario. Did I expect more? Of course. But the market is the market.”

This situation is reminiscent of Silva’s previous experiences in the Premier League, where he has faced a similar trajectory at Hull, Watford, and Everton—characterized by an encouraging start followed by declines in form and eventual dismissal. At Everton in 2019, he was let go while the club languished in 18th place, and history may be repeating itself in west London. However, Silva’s tenure at Fulham began on a high note; after his appointment in July 2021, he led the club to the Championship title, with an impressive tally of 106 goals during that campaign. Fulham’s return to the Premier League was smooth, allowing them to remain competitive, even flirting with European qualification. Yet, the magic seems to have faded, with the intensity and pressing that once defined their play giving way to a more fractured and disjointed style.

Complicating matters further, Fulham owner Shahid Khan recently expressed his belief in Silva as an integral part of the club’s long-term vision. “He’s been great,” Khan remarked in an interview with talkSPORT. “I really like him—not only as a person but also as a football manager and head coach. Definitely, I think he’s in our long-term plans.”

Following a disappointing performance over the weekend, Silva expressed his frustration: “It was a disappointing result for us, but more than the result, it was a very disappointing performance. We got what we deserved from the game, definitely. We played for only 20 minutes, and we lost due to our inability to handle the physicality of the Everton side.”

Fulham’s upcoming fixtures may prove pivotal for Silva’s future. After the international break, they will host Sunderland—one of the season’s surprise teams currently sitting fourth in the Premier League standings—before facing a challenging double-header against Tottenham and Manchester City.
