Galatasaray has established itself as a dominant force in Turkish football, notably through its recent acquisitions of high-profile players. Forward Mauro Icardi initially joined the club on loan before securing a permanent transfer, where he distinguished himself as the league’s top scorer during the 2023-24 season. Earlier this year, the club made headlines with a record-breaking £65 million ($85.5 million) signing of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen. Other significant additions included free transfers of Wilfried Zaha and Belgian playmaker Dries Mertens, complemented by essential players like Lucas Torreira.

However, the prospect of signing Lionel Messi presents a formidable challenge. Since his arrival at Inter Miami in 2023, Messi has revolutionized the club, leading it to its first trophy, the Leagues Cup. His contributions were pivotal in securing the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, as well as in achieving a record for the most points in a regular season. Messi’s exceptional performance has not only elevated his team but also significantly enhanced Major League Soccer’s global reputation.

Despite Messi’s elevated status in MLS, Galatasaray’s president, Ozbek, remains undeterred by the rumors linking the club to the Argentine star. In response to inquiries from Turkish journalists, Ozbek stated, “Did you say Messi? Galatasaray’s most successful point is the transfers it has made.” He emphasized the importance of retaining the core of the championship-winning team, asserting that the club has created a robust squad capable of achieving success in Europe.

Ozbek elaborated, “We have elevated our success level; therefore, the question about Messi is valid. Throughout this process, we have maintained a sound financial position, ensuring that our actions align with our financial capacity. This strategic approach has allowed us to build a competitive team with clear aspirations in Europe.”

Nevertheless, there are significant hurdles in Ozbek’s pursuit of Messi. The Argentine superstar recently signed a new contract with Inter Miami, which extends his tenure until 2028, at which point he will be 41. Messi has expressed his contentment with life in Miami, highlighting the positive experience he is having with his family in the city.

He remarked, “We were very happy in Barcelona, but our move to Miami was a family decision. The experience has been wonderful; living in this amazing city and receiving the affection of the people has been incredible.”

There remains a glimmer of hope for Galatasaray, as Messi will not participate in domestic competitions between December and March, coinciding with the MLS offseason. Earning an impressive £15 million ($19.7 million) per year, Messi’s allure is undeniable, and Galatasaray’s recent willingness to invest heavily in star players suggests that they are eager to pursue this opportunity.
