omidbasir- Gerard Fernández, affectionately known as ‘Peque,’ granted an interview to PTV Sevilla on Monday, where he reflected on his personal achievements, the shift in mentality within the team, and the obstacles he has faced.

“Victory always feels good, especially after three consecutive losses. The team needed this win to regain our composure and confidence. Although it’s not a final, it represents three crucial points, and we were aware of the need to turn our situation around as quickly as possible. I believe we played a very serious match and competed well,” the Catalan midfielder explained.

Regarding the three straight defeats, he noted, “It’s difficult to explain, but every match is unique. In the first half against Mallorca, I think the team performed well. The subsequent loss was painful, especially after such a significant victory against Barcelona. It was a tough blow, and perhaps we did not manage the following matches effectively. However, football ultimately comes down to details, and the opponent is also striving to win. We found another victory, and hopefully, many more to come.”

When asked about stepping up, he remarked, “I believe everyone is crucial to the team. Each of us must give our all whenever we participate.”

Reflecting on the ovation he received against Osasuna, he shared, “I didn’t expect it, and it brought me immense joy. Such moments are emotional for anyone, and I am truly grateful. It reinforces the work I consistently put in and motivates me to continue.”

On overcoming challenges, he stated, “I view everything as a learning experience, both in life and in sports. Last year may have seemed difficult for me, but it contributed to my improvement, and perhaps it has positioned me for success this season. I also came from a first year at Racing where I hardly played, but in my second year, I scored 19 goals. I firmly believe in the effort I put in daily. In the end, persistence is key; you may not reap the rewards immediately, but you must continue working.”

Addressing the current atmosphere, Peque observed, “There is a different feeling this year. We need to isolate ourselves from external noise and focus on what we can control.”

Regarding coach Almeyda, he commented, “He provides us with significant support and often speaks about life. He also helps us achieve our best performance, both individually and collectively. We’re working well, and I feel optimistic. Both he and the entire coaching staff instill confidence in us, expect a lot, and we must respond on the field.”

Discussing his opportunities, he said, “I was nearly out of the picture, which was challenging, but I have a lot of faith in myself. I believed I could turn things around, and with everyone’s help, I’m gradually doing just that. I know I wanted to be here, and fortunately, I still am.”

When asked about Almeyda’s expectations, he replied, “The coach wants me to play forward, aim for the box, dribble, and have the freedom to express my game. Additionally, there are defensive expectations, which are fundamental but necessary. I hold myself to high standards across all aspects, and I know I can improve much more.”

Looking ahead to the match against Espanyol, he remarked, “This match is special because my family and friends will be there to support me, which motivates me. Beyond that, we must aim for victory. They recently lost to a strong opponent like Villarreal, yet they played well and are in good form this year, so we cannot afford to relax.”

As for his goals, he emphasized, “We must maintain calm and stability, especially within the locker room. It’s essential to stay composed and take it one match at a time, which is a common saying but the only real approach. We need to give our all in each game, and that will ultimately define our position.”

Finally, he described the derby, saying, “It’s a beautiful, special match. I experienced it last year, and it’s a unique moment; I consider myself fortunate to have lived it. However, my focus is now on the upcoming match against Espanyol.”
