Giraldez Reflects on Team s Challenges and Highlights Player PerformancesGiraldez Reflects on Team s Challenges and Highlights Player Performances

Following the defeat, Claudio Giráldez maintained a composed outlook, recognizing that the team’s away streak was bound to come to an end. He noted unfortunate circumstances surrounding the initial two goals and commended the performances of Oyarzabal and Borja Iglesias.

Regarding the match, Giráldez remarked, “I believe we played an excellent first half against an opponent that, in previous encounters with this coach, had frequently managed to press effectively and create scoring opportunities. We controlled the game well, navigated their pressure effectively, and enjoyed significant possession time with several clear chances to take the lead or level the score.”

On the team’s lack of precision, he stated, “Today, we were not accurate at crucial moments during the match. Ilaix’s unfortunate slip left us exposed during a critical transition, and in the second half, we made errors beyond just a lack of accuracy. I think we conserved our efforts in retreating and transitioning back, likely due to Thursday’s exertions and the belief that being one player up meant it wasn’t necessary to remain as organized. This allowed the opposition to take advantage, compounded by my decision to field more attacking players, which left us slightly vulnerable. Additionally, the challenging field conditions made it physically demanding to play.”

Reflecting on the goals conceded, he explained, “The first two goals were due to mistakes. The first one was uncontrollable, as the player slipped on the poor field conditions. The second goal stemmed from an ill-advised pass from Mingueza and a questionable decision by Sotelo, which caught us off balance.”

Looking ahead, Giráldez reaffirmed the need to maintain the momentum they had built prior to the match, acknowledging the difficulties faced in away games and recognizing this as only their second defeat on the road this league season.

He praised Oyarzabal, stating, “I told him he delivered an outstanding performance. He truly excelled on the field. He is a proven player capable of managing all game situations.” He also acknowledged Borja Iglesias’ contributions, noting, “Borja has been scoring consistently this season. I hope both are included in the World Cup roster. We have exceptional forwards in this country, and I’m confident that the coach will make the right selections. Both Borja and Mikel are making it challenging for others. I’m glad Borja scored as it allowed us to build our play around him.”
