Grealish’s Injury and Everton’s Transfer Strategy

He has contributed four assists in his first two matches and was awarded the Premier League Player of the Month for August, coinciding with the week of his 30th birthday.

Grealish scored a crucial stoppage-time winner against Crystal Palace at Hill Dickinson Stadium and secured the decisive goal in Everton’s first Premier League victory at Bournemouth. He has participated in 19 matches to date, but his upcoming match against former club Aston Villa on January 18 may be his last for the time being.

When asked for an update on Grealish’s condition ahead of the fixture against Brighton, Everton manager David Moyes informed reporters, “We believe he’s probably going to need surgery, but that’s still not absolutely confirmed. However, it likely rules him out for the rest of the season.”

Moyes expressed disappointment over Grealish’s situation, stating, “It’s really disappointing for the player, for the club, and for all of us here. He is such an important player with a wealth of experience, and we will certainly miss him as he has contributed significantly to our efforts.”

There have been discussions about Everton activating the purchase option in Grealish’s loan agreement, reportedly valued around £50 million ($69 million). However, Moyes remained non-committal, responding, “It’s far too early to make such decisions.”

Despite declining to discuss Grealish’s future, Moyes confirmed that Everton is actively exploring the January transfer market for potential new signings as the transfer deadline approaches. He remarked, “I’d like to say we’re out there looking, which I think I’ve mentioned in every press conference. It’s not that we’re shying away from it, but I’d say it’s probably less likely than likely.”

This season, Everton has struggled to score goals, and the loss of Grealish’s creativity will exacerbate the issue. In recent matches, Thierno Barry has begun to find his form, scoring four goals in his last six matches after taking 17 games to net his first. Moyes is hopeful that Barry can ignite the team’s attack in the long run, commenting, “He has to keep progressing, but how he’s playing at the moment wouldn’t be enough to satisfy me. He needs to improve and score more goals.”

Additionally, Harrison Armstrong, a 19-year-old player, has been recalled from his loan at Preston to help mitigate the squad’s absences. When asked if Armstrong would remain with the team for the remainder of the season, Moyes stated, “We won’t make a decision until certainly after Brighton. I’m in regular contact with Peter Ridsdale and Paul Heckingbottom at Preston, but we’ll see how things unfold. He hasn’t looked out of place in the Premier League, which is the highest compliment I can give him.”
