Greenwood’s Resurgence: A Complex Journey in Ligue 1

At just 23 years old, he has quickly reestablished his status as one of the league’s most impactful attackers. Since his arrival in France, Greenwood has rejuvenated his rhythm, regained confidence, and solidified his role within the squad. Despite facing criticism over inconsistency in the past, this season marks his most comprehensive performance to date. His recent brace during a 5-1 victory against Nice serves as a testament to his potential, once considered among England’s brightest prospects.

However, his revitalized form also brings renewed media scrutiny linked to his past, particularly during upcoming matches such as the one against Newcastle in the Champions League at the Velodrome. The English press continues to associate him with allegations of attempted rape and assault from 2022. Although the case was dismissed a year later due to retracted cooperation and new evidence, the stigma endures, particularly in England, where he has faced ongoing fan abuse.

Manager Roberto De Zerbi has spoken highly of Greenwood’s character both on and off the pitch, stating, “I never delve into the players’ private lives. But what I can say is that he’s a good person. He paid a heavy price for what happened. He arrived in the right environment and has behaved well. He has a very reserved personality. It saddens me what happened to him because I know a very different person from the one portrayed in England.”

De Zerbi further noted Greenwood’s consistently strong performances, emphasizing that while there may be fluctuations in form, the coaching staff is pleased with his development. Following the dropping of charges against Greenwood in 2023, Manchester United acknowledged that he had made “mistakes” but determined that the evidence did not justify terminating his contract. Nonetheless, internal and external pressures rendered his return to the club untenable. Getafe offered him a temporary reprieve, while Marseille has provided a permanent opportunity for renewal.

Within the Marseille camp, Greenwood is regarded as a respectful and diligent player, contrasting sharply with the public perception that has followed him. Teammate Angel Gomes commented, “It all depends on the environment he’s given. He’s a really nice guy… when he’s on the pitch, he’s having fun. As a friend, it’s even nicer.”

Outside of club football, however, Greenwood’s future remains uncertain. Reports from England indicate that, despite his resurgence in France, Greenwood still aspires to represent the England national team again, even though he has effectively been sidelined by the FA and manager Thomas Tuchel. Alternatively, Greenwood has recently acquired Jamaican citizenship through familial ties and was contacted by Jamaica’s coach, Steve McClaren, regarding World Cup qualifiers. Unfortunately, McClaren was unable to reach the Marseille forward and has since vacated his position.

Greenwood’s revival with Marseille has been remarkable; last season, he scored 21 league goals and provided six assists, finishing joint top scorer in Ligue 1. His contributions were instrumental in securing 16 points for Marseille and aiding their return to the Champions League.

From a footballing perspective, Greenwood has fulfilled all expectations placed upon him. However, rebuilding his reputation is a far slower process than improving his athletic performance. This is evident even after Manchester United acknowledged their oversight regarding his case. Unfortunately, hostility, particularly from English fanbases, continues to accompany him, manifesting in social media abuse, derogatory chants, and ongoing scrutiny in stadiums, perpetuating a narrative that the legal system has already moved past.
