Pep Guardiola is set to reach a significant milestone as he prepares to manage his 1,000th game when Manchester City faces Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday. The Spanish manager, who has won six Premier League titles in his eight seasons at City, is astonished by the remarkable statistics he has accumulated throughout his career.

Since embarking on his managerial journey with Barcelona B in 2007, Guardiola has secured 715 victories across all competitions. His tenure at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City has seen him lift 12 top-flight titles and three Champions League trophies, all while enduring only 128 defeats and achieving an additional 14 cup victories.

In an interview with BBC Sport, Guardiola acknowledged his impressive win record: “Of course I know, a lot. The numbers are insane, I’m sorry to tell you. I’m not focused on the count, but when I reflect on these milestones, the victories, and the averages—not just in the Premier League but also in the Champions League—it’s stunning what we’ve accomplished at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and here. It’s a challenge to reach such heights again; if I started over, I likely wouldn’t achieve it.”

Widely regarded as a transformative figure in English football, Guardiola’s innovative style has inspired many managers across the league. Under his leadership, Manchester City became the first team to achieve 100 points in a Premier League season, the first to complete a domestic treble, and the first to win four consecutive league titles.

Addressing his extraordinary win percentage, which exceeds 70%, Guardiola stated, “This means that in every 10 games, we win seven and draw one or two. This success is partly due to being at clubs like Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and City with exceptional players. Nevertheless, it demands relentless hard work, dedication, and passion—qualities that set me apart.”

When asked about being labeled the greatest manager of all time, Guardiola responded with humility, saying, “They are completely right! The legacy of every manager influences history. I can claim a share of it because my record speaks for itself, and it’s gratifying to witness my teams flourish. I never set out to be the best, though.”

Guardiola’s induction into the League Managers Association (LMA) Hall of Fame coincides with this milestone, with former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson remarking on the significance of such longevity in achieving this landmark.

As Manchester City prepares to take on Liverpool—whom they have engaged in a fierce rivalry with over the past eight seasons—Guardiola expressed his appreciation for the competition: “I believe we have pushed Liverpool to excel, and they have similarly driven us to improve. If I had to choose one rival to celebrate this personal milestone with, it would undoubtedly be them.”

With Liverpool being one of the teams against which Guardiola has sustained the most losses (10), he commended them for their role in elevating his management journey and acknowledged former manager Jurgen Klopp as a formidable opponent. Klopp has faced Guardiola more than any other manager in his career, winning 11 of those encounters.

“Liverpool, especially under Jurgen, has represented the most significant challenge in this country,” Guardiola remarked. “It could not have been more fitting. The rivalry has been healthy, and the respect we have for each other has always been apparent. Jurgen has contributed immensely to my growth, and I miss the challenge he presents.”

In summary, Guardiola’s legacy continues to grow as he reaches this milestone, leaving an indelible mark on the world of football.
