Pep Guardiola has publicly apologized for his confrontation with a cameraman that occurred following Manchester City’s Premier League defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.

In the aftermath of the match, which ended in a controversial 2-1 loss for City, Guardiola expressed his frustration over what he perceived to be several unfavorable officiating decisions, including a disputed penalty call, a handball shout, and a marginal offside. This left him visibly upset as he exited the pitch, where he engaged with referee Sam Barrott and, in a moment of agitation, removed the headphones from a cameraman to speak directly to him.

“I apologized,” Guardiola stated regarding the incident, though he refrained from disclosing the content of their exchange. “I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it. I don’t like it. I expressed my regret to the cameraman immediately after.” He continued, “I am who I am. After 1,000 games, I am not a perfect person and I make significant mistakes. My actions stem from my desire to defend my team and my club.”

The match also saw tensions on the field, with City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma being escorted down the tunnel and Newcastle midfielder Joelinton being restrained by manager Eddie Howe. Guardiola also had a brief discussion with Newcastle captain Bruno Guimarães, noting, “We have known each other for many years, and we usually converse after matches, whether at the Etihad or elsewhere. I am not sure what happened this time. Our paths have crossed often, and I value my relationship with him. I tend to be emotional, enjoying discussions and expressing myself with my hands and gestures.”

Looking ahead, Manchester City will host Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, aiming to secure their unbeaten start in the competition. Currently positioned fourth in their group, a victory against the Bundesliga side is crucial for consolidating their standing and securing a direct path to the knockout stages. This match will mark Guardiola’s 100th as City manager in the Champions League, a milestone that follows their triumphant title win in Istanbul earlier this year against Inter Milan.

However, Guardiola is also aware of the challenges faced in the tournament, recalling near misses, such as the 2021 final loss to Chelsea and a heart-wrenching semi-final defeat to Real Madrid the following year, where late goals altered the outcome.

“I realize I am getting older; every weekend is a milestone,” Guardiola reflected, highlighting that Manchester City is the only English club to qualify for the Champions League for the past 14 seasons. “Each season brings its own challenges, and I hope we will be present again next season. It is a special experience for everyone involved to compete against Europe’s elite teams, which holds significant prestige and financial implications for the club.”

While Guardiola emphasized the importance of consistency, he acknowledged that the journey is often fraught with disappointments. “Sport is challenging; not every moment is enjoyable or easy. Last season was particularly difficult for us, as we did not secure a major trophy, finishing the Premier League in third place and facing setbacks in the Champions League and FA Cup.

Defender Josko Gvardiol described the previous season as the worst of his career, stating, “It was painful. I struggled to sleep at night, trying to find solutions and support the team to improve our situation. However, I am relieved that we have moved past it and are recovering well.”
