Pep Guardiola has expressed feelings of “embarrassment and shame” following his interaction with a television cameraman after Manchester City’s loss to Newcastle United on Saturday.

The incident occurred on the pitch at St James’ Park, where Guardiola appeared to engage in a heated confrontation with the cameraman. In addition, he was observed having animated discussions with referee Samuel Barrott and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimarães after City’s 2-1 defeat.

During a news conference on Monday, when asked about his comments to the cameraman, Guardiola acknowledged his role in the dispute and confirmed that he had apologized.

“I feel embarrassed and ashamed when I see it,” Guardiola stated. “I don’t like it. I apologized to the cameraman immediately. I am who I am. After 1,000 games, I am not a perfect person; I make significant mistakes. It’s not about that. What is certain is that I will defend my team and my club.”

Ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s visit to the Etihad Stadium for a Champions League match on Tuesday, Guardiola also took a subtle jab at Claudio Echeverri’s agent. The young Argentinian player is on loan from City to Leverkusen, but has found it challenging to secure playing time in the Bundesliga.

City had preferred Echeverri to join Girona, a club within the City Football Group, and Guardiola hinted at his displeasure regarding the player’s current situation in Germany.

“I always hope players get plenty of minutes; that is our intention,” Guardiola remarked when addressing Echeverri’s circumstances. “We hold him in high regard as a football player. I am confident that his agent is well aware of the situation.”

When questioned about the possibility of Echeverri returning to City in January, Guardiola replied, “That is a question for his esteemed agent.”
