Pep Guardiola has stated that there is heightened pressure on six of Manchester City’s Premier League rivals to secure more trophies, attributing this to their higher net spending over the past five years.

Guardiola humorously noted that he feels “grumpy” due to the club’s limited expenditure during the January transfer window, revealing that Manchester City ranks seventh in net spending since the summer of 2021.

Clubs such as Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Newcastle have outspent City in this timeframe. Guardiola suggested that the focus should be on these clubs to deliver more silverware given their financial investments.

In response to questions regarding City’s acquisition of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guéhi in January, Guardiola remarked, “Yeah, really good. I’m a little bit sad and upset because in net spending over the last five years we are seventh in the Premier League. I want to be the first. I don’t understand why the club doesn’t spend more money. I am a little bit grumpy with them.”

He continued, “However, as we have historically won due to our spending, now six teams must claim victories in the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cups due to their higher expenditures over the last five years. This is not an opinion; it’s a fact. Good luck to the six teams ahead of us in net spending over the past five years. Let’s see what unfolds. That’s a nice quote, eh?”

Guardiola is preparing for a crucial Carabao Cup semifinal against Newcastle at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday, where he will be without Guéhi due to eligibility issues. Rayan Cherki is also being assessed after sustaining an injury during the recent 2-2 draw against Tottenham.

Rúben Dias has returned to training, and Guardiola must decide whether to risk the Portugal international. He remarked, “We have a chance to make our fifth final in 10 years in the Carabao Cup. Of course, I would prefer to start 2-0 up, but I am aware of how competitive Newcastle is, especially as a Champions League team. We must be prepared and ensure our players recover from the tough match against Spurs, play our game in front of our fans, and strive to reach Wembley in March.”
