Pep Guardiola has extended an apology to Premier League referee Farai Hallam, should the official feel offended by his recent comments following Manchester City’s victory over Wolves on Saturday.

The City manager voiced his displeasure regarding Hallam’s decision to deny a penalty for an apparent handball by Wolves defender Yerson Mosquera, despite being instructed to review the incident on the pitchside monitor by the video assistant referee (VAR). Guardiola remarked that when a referee is called to the screen, it typically leads to either the awarding or overturning of a penalty. He noted that Hallam had made a significant debut, stating that “everybody will know” him now.

When questioned if his remarks were too harsh, Guardiola responded, “With their statements, they defend each other, which is completely understandable. They have to do that. But at the same time, I have to defend my club. How many times did I criticize the referees last season, which was the worst season in 10 years? How many times? If he is offended, then I am so sorry. I know it’s not easy on debut, and it’s happened. Everyone is sensitive, I know that.”

After the match, Guardiola mentioned he was expecting a call from referees’ chief Howard Webb to explain why the incident was not deemed a penalty. He reiterated his position in a subsequent news conference, saying, “Never, ever in 10 years have I criticized the referees. What I am saying this season are arguments and reasons for our actions. I defend my club and my players. Howard Webb defends the referees, and he has to do that.”

Guardiola noted the complexities of officiating during set pieces, asserting that every action can be interpreted as a foul. He expressed the need to advocate for his club and players on various occasions, especially with recent contentious decisions.

As Manchester City prepares for their upcoming European match against Turkish giants Galatasaray, Guardiola maintained his position on officiating by recalling specific disallowed goals and handball incidents that have drawn scrutiny. He spoke about the necessity of addressing these issues, especially when they seem to accumulate against his team.

Guardiola’s frustrations with refereeing decisions have been evident throughout the season. The Premier League’s Key Match Incidents Panel had previously ruled that City should have received a penalty in a November loss to Newcastle. Additionally, a decision regarding a disallowed goal in the Carabao Cup semi-final sparked further grievances.

Recent officiating decisions have all been closely contested, with Guardiola feeling that they have consistently gone against his side. He articulated that these cumulative close calls have a significant impact on the team’s performance.
