Guehi’s Future: High-Stakes Pursuit Amidst European Interests

Marc Guehi, 25, is under contract with Crystal Palace until the summer of 2026. He has communicated to the club his intention not to sign an extension, effectively paving the way for his departure. This decision has triggered a fierce competition among Europe’s elite clubs, placing Palace in a challenging strategic position.

Last summer, Liverpool came close to securing Guehi’s signature, but the transfer collapsed dramatically on deadline day when Palace could not finalize a replacement. Barcelona has identified central defense as a priority area for 2026. Sporting director Deco and head coach Hansi Flick are aligned on the necessity of acquiring an experienced left-sided center-back to partner with teenage talent Pau Cubarsí. Guehi was regarded internally as the ideal candidate, but enthusiasm appears to be waning.

According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona had been closely monitoring Guehi and maintained contact with his representatives, recognizing that he could sign a pre-contract agreement as early as next week. However, discussions stalled after the latest salary expectations were revealed, and it has been reported that the financial gap was deemed insurmountable. This situation is reminiscent of Real Madrid’s interest, which also diminished due to similar financial concerns regarding a potential deal.

As Barcelona reassess their options, they have been linked with other elite defenders, though none offer a straightforward solution. Alessandro Bastoni and Josko Gvardiol are among the preferred choices, while Nico Schlotterbeck and Pau Torres are also under consideration. However, each of these players would command a significant transfer fee, and Barcelona’s budget remains uncertain. Bayern Munich has publicly acknowledged its interest in Guehi, with sporting director Max Eberl confirming that the club is actively exploring the market. In a conversation with DAZN, Eberl emphasized that extending Dayot Upamecano’s contract is their priority but acknowledged the necessity of considering alternatives if negotiations do not progress as hoped.

Eberl stated, “It’s absolutely clear that we at Bayern Munich are exploring the market. Our clear goal is to extend Upa’s [Dayot Upamecano] contract. That’s our ultimate aim. If that doesn’t materialize, we must be prepared. We would be foolish not to. That’s the reason. I’ve not confirmed anything, but we are active in the market.”

Liverpool continues to view Guehi as a potential long-term successor to Virgil van Dijk, who will turn 35 next season. The urgency at Anfield has increased due to Ibrahima Konate’s contract situation, which also expires in 2026, attracting interest from rival clubs, including Real Madrid.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his future, Guehi has asserted that last summer’s failed transfer to Liverpool did not have a significant emotional impact on him. In an interview with Sky Sports, he downplayed the challenges, emphasizing his focus on football and the support he receives from teammates like Maxence Lacroix. He remarked, “I think everyone has this perception that it was difficult. Actually, it wasn’t difficult at all. Because when you’re focused on what’s the most important thing, it becomes easy. I know that God has a plan for me, and whatever that plan may be, it will come to fruition at some point. My goal has always been to play football and perform to the best of my ability. Fortunately, I get to do this with individuals like Max.”
