Héctor Herrera’s Return to Houston Dynamo: A Strategic Move

In a significant move to celebrate his return, Houston Dynamo has launched a limited-time promotion, featuring $16 tickets for the home opener against Chicago Fire on February 21. This initiative pays homage to Héctor Herrera’s jersey number and acknowledges his immense popularity among fans.

“It’s an honor to welcome Héctor back to Houston,” stated club president Pat Onstad. He emphasized Herrera’s status as a respected leader both on and off the field, noting that his influence played a pivotal role in reshaping the club during his initial tenure. Onstad pointed out Herrera’s contributions, including guiding the Dynamo to the 2023 U.S. Open Cup title and achieving a club-record points total in 2024, asserting that his return aligns with the organization’s ambition to build on previous successes.

While Herrera’s responsibilities may differ during this second stint, the Dynamo are confident that his experience and winning mentality will enhance the squad. Additionally, reports indicate that Houston is in discussions with Cruz Azul regarding Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz, which could further strengthen Herrera’s support in the midfield.

During his first spell with the Dynamo from 2022 to 2024, Herrera made 82 appearances, scoring eight goals and providing 22 assists. He captained the team to a trophy and reached the Western Conference final; however, his departure was mired in controversy.

His final match was marked by a red card for spitting at a referee, leading the club to decide against renewing his contract shortly thereafter. Following his stint in MLS, Herrera returned to Mexico, signing with Toluca, where he won Liga MX titles in both the Clausura and Apertura 2025. Despite being part of a championship-winning team, he struggled to cement himself as a central figure, with 34 appearances across all competitions.
