Henrik Rydström has been appointed as the new head coach of MLS’s Columbus Crew, effective Wednesday.

He succeeds Wilfried Nancy, who departed on December 3 to take up the coaching role at Glasgow Celtic in Scotland.

Rydström, 49, previously managed Malmö from 2023 to 2025, where he achieved notable success, leading the team to consecutive league titles and securing the 2024 Swedish Cup championship. His coaching career also includes tenure at Sirius from 2019 to 2021 and Kalmar both in 2018 and from 2021 to 2022.

Before transitioning to coaching, Rydström enjoyed a successful playing career as a midfielder for Kalmar, where he played from 1993 to 2013.

Joining Rydström at Columbus Crew are assistant coach Theodor Olsson and first team analyst Mak Pakhei, both of whom worked with him at Malmö. Meanwhile, goalkeeper coach Phil Boerger and head of video and data analysis Marc O’Neill will continue in their roles from Nancy’s staff.
