Howard Highlights Reyna as a Unique Talent in American SoccerHoward Highlights Reyna as a Unique Talent in American Soccer

Tim Howard has underscored that Gio Reyna possesses qualities that are seldom found in American soccer, labeling him a “generational talent” whose technical skills set him apart from the traditional profile of U.S. players. The former goalkeeper for Manchester United and Everton remarked that while the United States has historically cultivated physically strong players, dependable defenders, capable goalkeepers, and industrious strikers, Reyna embodies a distinctive talent.

“I’m a fan of Gio because I have a keen awareness of who U.S. Soccer is. As I’ve mentioned multiple times, we do not produce players like him. Regardless of whether they achieve their full potential, we simply do not create talents of this caliber,” Howard stated during his appearance on the Unfiltered Soccer podcast. “We’ve seen generational talents like Todd Ramos, Claudio Reyna, Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, and Christian Pulisic, but they are few and far between. While we have a wealth of robust players, solid center backs, reliable goalkeepers, and even proficient strikers, players like Reyna are exceptional.”

Howard remains optimistic about Reyna’s ability to navigate his challenges and reach his potential with the national team. With experience from three World Cups, he emphasized his belief that Reyna can carve out a role within Mauricio Pochettino’s system and make a significant contribution as the team prepares for the 2026 World Cup on home soil.

“I still hold out hope that he will regain his form with the USMNT and find his place,” Howard expressed. “It is challenging to seize opportunities in critical moments when the stakes are high and the world is watching. However, I believe he has the capability to rise to those occasions, which cannot be said for many players.”

Despite transferring to Borussia Monchengladbach this summer from Borussia Dortmund in search of more playing time, Reyna has faced difficulties in achieving consistency. The 22-year-old has featured in only six of the Bundesliga club’s ten league matches but has played a total of just 146 minutes in those appearances. Injuries, combined with the club’s inconsistent performance and efforts to manage his playing time, have hindered his return to full fitness.

The upcoming matches against South American teams present a crucial opportunity for Reyna to solidify his role in Pochettino’s plans, especially as other players are currently sidelined.
