Zlatan Ibrahimovic exemplified an extreme mindset in professional football, characterized by an unwavering commitment to giving his all. His approach was such that no one could question his work ethic, even during moments of personal discomfort. Rather than seek excuses to avoid hard work, Ibrahimovic preferred to face embarrassment than leave any doubts about whether he could have exerted more effort.

This relentless mentality enabled Ibrahimovic to sustain an illustrious career until his retirement from AC Milan at the age of 41. He is celebrated as one of the greatest forwards of his generation, amassing significant honors across the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and England, and even making an impact in MLS with LA Galaxy.

In a candid interview with Arena Sport, Ibrahimovic shared insights into his intense dedication, revealing a legendary incident from his recovery after two knee injuries. While on a treadmill, he experienced an urgent need to use the restroom but chose to continue with his intense workout, stating, “I kept running because in my head I had to finish first and then go. But that’s who I am. I always said: ‘If I cheat, I cheat myself, not you.’”

Throughout his career, Ibrahimovic scored 511 goals in 866 club appearances and became Sweden’s top scorer, finding the net 62 times in 122 international matches. Despite achieving nearly all of his goals, he has noted that Champions League success eluded him. Reflecting on his journey, he stated, “The secret is not how much you spend, the secret is in your head – how much you want it, how much you’re willing to sacrifice. That’s the secret. It’s the mentality, and mentality doesn’t cost a thing.”

Post-retirement, Ibrahimovic has transitioned to an advisory role within AC Milan’s ownership group, where he is now helping to develop talent, including USMNT star Christian Pulisic. He is also closely monitoring his son Maximilian’s career, who has recently left Milan to join Dutch powerhouse Ajax on loan.

Maximilian has expressed his desire to carve out his own identity in the sport, stating, “I think my father is happy for me, but Ibrahimovic is just a name, I am Maximilian. I want to write my own story. This step is a great challenge. I will work extremely hard every day. I want to be a good player for Ajax, to win and to improve. I think I can entertain the fans well.”
