omidbasir- MANCHESTER, England — Idrissa Gueye, the midfielder for Everton, was sent off for violent conduct merely 13 minutes into their Premier League match against Manchester United on Monday after striking teammate Michael Keane in the face.

The incident occurred early in the first half at Old Trafford during an argument triggered by a misplaced pass from Gueye to Keane, which led to a scoring opportunity for Bruno Fernandes.

Referee Tony Harrington promptly issued a red card to Gueye after observing the altercation, and he had to be restrained by both Jordan Pickford and Iliman Ndiaye as he attempted to continue his dispute with Keane.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, the decision to award a red card to Gueye for violent conduct was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, as the action was deemed a clear strike to Keane’s face.

This unexpected development forced David Moyes, Everton’s manager, to make a second tactical adjustment just three minutes after Seamus Coleman had to leave the pitch due to injury during his first Premier League start of the season.

Post-match, Moyes commented, “I didn’t think there was anything in it. While I was a bit annoyed by their confrontation, I was also somewhat pleased to see their passion, as it demonstrated their commitment to the team. Without that level of fight and resilience, we wouldn’t have managed to secure the result today. Gueye has since apologized to the dressing room. No issues, and we move forward.”

At the time of Gueye’s dismissal, the score remained 0-0, but shortly thereafter, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall scored with a beautifully curled finish from the edge of the penalty area, putting Everton ahead 1-0 despite being a player down.

Remarkably, Everton maintained their lead against Manchester United throughout the entire second half, ultimately claiming an unexpected three points at Old Trafford.

This incident marks another instance of teammates clashing on the field. A notable recent example occurred when Stoke City’s Ricardo Fuller slapped teammate and captain Andy Griffin on December 28, 2008, during a match against West Ham.

In 2005, Newcastle teammates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were also involved in a confrontation during a Premier League match against Aston Villa, resulting in both receiving red cards. Additionally, Blackburn Rovers players David Batty and Graeme Le Saux had a heated argument during a Champions League tie against Spartak Moscow in 1995.
