Igor Thiago’s remarkable performance led Brentford to a 3-1 victory over Newcastle, who were reduced to ten men during the match.

Thiago, who has been a standout for Brentford this season, scored twice against Newcastle, bringing his total to eight goals in the Premier League. Only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland has netted more goals this season.

The match began with Harvey Barnes scoring for Newcastle at the Gtech Community Stadium, but Kevin Schade quickly equalized for the home team. Thiago then confidently converted a penalty to give Brentford the lead and capped off the evening with a second goal late in the game.

Brentford’s recent resurgence has seen them rise to 12th place in the league, having secured five victories from their first eleven games. Thiago’s combination of speed, strength, and a natural goal-scoring ability has been instrumental in this success.

Despite being uncapped by Brazil, Thiago’s outstanding form has likely put him on the radar of national coach Carlo Ancelotti. Interestingly, the 24-year-old is also eligible to represent Bulgaria. Brentford manager Keith Andrews praised his development, stating, “He is growing in stature and confidence and has been sensational this season.”

Thiago previously declined the opportunity to play for Brazil’s under-23 team to keep his international options open. He has expressed a strong desire to represent the national team, stating, “I’ve always dreamed of playing for Brazil. I want to ensure that my inclusion is meaningful.”

With nine goals across all competitions this season, Thiago’s performance may soon make it difficult for Ancelotti to overlook him, especially with the upcoming 2026 World Cup.

Thiago’s journey to this point has not been without challenges. Signed for £30 million from Club Brugge in July 2024 to replace the influential Ivan Toney, Thiago faced a tough inaugural season marred by injuries, failing to score in eight matches. However, with the departures of Mbeumo and Wissa, who together scored 40 goals, Thiago has risen to the challenge, determined to reclaim his potential.

His early life was marked by adversity; he lost his father at a young age and worked various jobs to support himself before making his mark in football. After honing his skills with Vere FC and later Cruzeiro, he moved to Europe, where he shone at Ludogorets, contributing significantly to their title win in the 2022-23 season and earning accolades in the Conference League.

Now fit and excelling at Brentford, Thiago’s aspirations for a national team call-up seem increasingly plausible as the World Cup approaches.
