Impact of Storm Leonardo and Marta on Sevilla Emergency Measures and Football Match ConcernsImpact of Storm Leonardo and Marta on Sevilla Emergency Measures and Football Match Concerns

Storm Leonardo has battered the Iberian Peninsula, causing significant flooding and placing local rivers at risk of overflowing, with Andalusia being particularly hard hit. Over 11,000 individuals have had to evacuate their homes. Following closely on the heels of this storm, the system known as ‘Marta’ has taken over. Early this morning, the City Council of Sevilla elevated the Territorial Emergency Plan to Level 1, and the Government’s subdelegate in Sevilla, Francisco Toscano, indicated that today would be a “complicated day in the province.”

As a result, Sevilla FC has formally communicated to LaLiga their preference to postpone this afternoon’s match against Girona, scheduled for 18:30, due to the orange weather alert in the city. This decision is motivated by a concern for the safety of fans traveling to the capital. Ultimately, it remains at the discretion of LaLiga and the relevant authorities to act on this request. LaLiga’s criteria for match suspension only dictates action in the presence of a red alert, placing the responsibility for making a suspension decision on the government subdelegation.

The government subdelegation has urged the public to exercise caution and to avoid unnecessary travel. Individuals are advised against moving along riverbanks or attempting to cross streams, which have swollen due to recent heavy rainfall. Additionally, it is important for residents to stay informed through official channels.

In addition to the Rayo-Oviedo match, which has already been canceled, it remains to be seen what will happen with the Sevilla-Girona game at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán stadium. As of now, LaLiga has not made any statements regarding Sevilla’s request, and the club awaits a response to determine whether the match will proceed today or be rescheduled.
