Johnny Cardoso, midfielder for the United States men’s national team, is set to miss at least a week of action due to a low-grade muscle injury sustained during Wednesday’s training session, as confirmed by Atlético Madrid on Thursday.

The injury will prevent Cardoso from participating in the upcoming Copa del Rey quarterfinal match against Real Betis, his former club. Following the discomfort he experienced during practice, he was replaced by Koke Resurrección in the training drills conducted by manager Diego Simeone.

Subsequent tests have confirmed the extent of Cardoso’s injury, which will also keep him out of the subsequent LaLiga match against Betis, scheduled for Sunday at Madrid’s Metropolitano Stadium.

At 24 years old, Cardoso joins fellow Atlético player Alexander Sørloth on the sidelines, who is currently recovering from a head injury incurred last Saturday during a match against Levante.

In light of these injuries, Atlético Madrid has reinforced their squad by signing forward Ademola Lookman from Atalanta, as well as midfielders Obed Vargas and Rodrigo Mendoza from Seattle Sounders FC and Elche, respectively.
