Inter Miami Bounces Back with Victory Over Atletico NacionalInter Miami Bounces Back with Victory Over Atletico Nacional

Following a disappointing start to 2026, Inter Miami has returned to form with a hard-fought victory against Atletico Nacional at Estadio Atanasio Girardot. Despite initially trailing, the team rallied as Luis Suarez equalized just ten minutes into the second half. The match concluded dramatically with a stoppage-time own goal from Elkin Rivero, clinching the win for Miami.

Prior to the match, Lionel Messi, making his first visit to Medellin in 15 years, met with renowned former Colombian international Rene Higuita. Higuita, who made headlines in 1995 for his iconic scorpion kick during a friendly against England, was honored to interact with Messi. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner signed a ball for Higuita and even facilitated a recreation of Higuita’s famous move.

Although Messi was substituted in the 75th minute before the decisive goal, his impact was undeniable. Atletico Nacional’s Alfredo Morales expressed his admiration, stating, “He’s No. 1 in the world. We know what he generates in our people here in Colombia. Having the opportunity to face him was a privilege that will contribute to our growth as players and as a club.”

Coach Javier Mascherano praised the team’s performance, highlighting the improved cohesion following further training. He noted, “The team was much more recognizable today. We competed well against a talented opponent, although there’s still room for improvement.”

Winger Mateo Silvetti reflected on the team’s gradual adaptation during the match, stating, “We found our rhythm and had more possession than in our previous game. These competitive fixtures allow us to test ourselves as we gear up for the season ahead.”

Inter Miami is set to continue their pre-season preparations next Saturday with a match against Barcelona de Guayaquil at Estadio Monumental Banco Pichincha, where Messi is expected to play.
