Inter Miami Eyes Copa Libertadores Participation with MessiInter Miami Eyes Copa Libertadores Participation with Messi

There has previously been discussion surrounding this initiative, particularly regarding the significant advantages it would offer CONMEBOL by featuring Lionel Messi at their premier event. Speculation intensified following Messi’s move to Florida in 2023, where he led Inter Miami to victory in the Leagues Cup against Mexican opposition. Further discussions about the club’s aspirations have been reported for 2024, especially with Liga MX teams now participating in the Copa Libertadores.

The tournament may soon see further expansion, as Inter Miami has already participated in the FIFA Club World Cup and celebrated a historic MLS Cup triumph in 2025, solidifying their status as the leaders in North American soccer.

In light of these developments, new discussions are being planned with CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez. Jorge Mas, the managing owner of Inter Miami, acknowledged these ambitions, stating to Ole: “I would love to see the Club World Cup return so we can compete against the best clubs in the world.”

He continued, “Obviously, a competition like the Copa Libertadores is something I would love to see Inter Miami participate in someday to challenge the giants of South America—a tournament that Leo has yet to experience. Those are our aspirations.”

Mas shared that he has engaged in conversations with CONMEBOL and Dominguez to explore the possibility of participating in the Copa Libertadores, citing precedents wherein Mexican clubs have previously competed. “I would like to play in the Libertadores; I have said it publicly and privately within the League.”

When discussing the eligibility of MLS champions for the Copa Libertadores, Mas emphasized the growing competitiveness of teams in the United States: “I believe that the MLS champions, just like those from Liga MX, deserve a spot. While these discussions fall under CONCACAF and CONMEBOL, I believe that hemispheric soccer can continue to develop. Involving North American and Mexican clubs would enhance the quality of the competition.”

Lionel Messi has agreed to extend his contract with Inter Miami through 2028. Although the Herons have seen the retirement of fellow Barcelona legends Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, Luis Suarez has committed to another year with the team.

David Beckham and the club’s ownership group aim to make additional high-profile acquisitions to maintain a competitive edge as they transition to a new, purpose-built stadium.

Mas stated, “We’re building a squad capable of competing at the highest level, even more so than what we showcased last year. Our goal is to win the CONCACAF Champions League, and I have communicated that to the club. We aim to achieve this in seven matches this year. That’s why we’re enhancing our squad, particularly in key positions. We have the capability to compete with all clubs, including Tigres and America, who are formidable opponents, and we have great respect for them.”

As Inter Miami prepares for another domestic season, which may include action in the Copa Libertadores, Messi, the most decorated player in football history, is also contemplating his options for pursuing global accolades. Following his instrumental role in securing World Cup glory for Argentina at Qatar 2022, he is expected to be part of the title defense this summer in North America, despite not yet officially confirming his participation.
