Alexander Isak underwent surgery on his ankle and lower leg this past Monday. This injury follows a challenging start to his tenure at Liverpool, where he has only managed to score his second Premier League goal since his £125 million transfer from Newcastle at the end of the summer transfer window. Unfortunately, Isak now faces an extensive recovery period that may delay his return to the pitch for several months.

On Tuesday night, Isak shared an update via his Instagram story, expressing gratitude towards Liverpool supporters for their well wishes during this difficult time. He stated, “I’m gutted to be out for a while. It’s time to recover and support from the sidelines. I will work hard to return as soon as possible. Thank you to all the Reds and everyone else for the kind messages; they do not go unnoticed.”

Experts estimate that Isak could be sidelined for approximately two months. Injury specialist Ben Dinnery emphasizes the importance of a cautious reintegration into the team, with an eye on his long-term fitness as he prepares for the 2026-27 season. “With a fractured fibula, the severity of the injury will dictate the recovery timeline. Typically, this kind of injury requires six to eight weeks of recovery, but Isak’s ankle complications and surgery could prolong this period. Setbacks are common, and players rarely have a straightforward path back to full fitness,” Dinnery noted.

Dinnery further commented on Isak’s recent performances, suggesting that he had started to regain his form akin to his time at Newcastle, despite missing the pre-season. He added, “The reality is that Isak is likely to return late in the season, initially receiving limited playing time to help him regain his match fitness, with the main focus being a strong pre-season ahead of next year.”

Liverpool manager Arne Slot voiced his concerns regarding the tackle that led to Isak’s injury, labeling Van de Ven’s challenge as ‘reckless.’ “That was a reckless challenge. I’ve previously commented on the tackle by Xavi Simons, which I deemed unintentional. However, Van de Ven’s tackle poses a serious risk of injury every time it is attempted,” Slot remarked.

Conversely, Tottenham head coach Thomas Frank defended Van de Ven, arguing that the defender was merely acting on instinct in an attempt to prevent a goal. “I disagree with Slot’s assessment. In many ways, Van de Ven was trying to block the shot, and unfortunately, Isak’s planted foot exacerbated the situation, making it appear worse than it was. This reaction is instinctual for any defender,” Frank explained.

He concluded by emphasizing Van de Ven’s character as a fair and competitive player, noting that the two athletes have amicably addressed the incident, which he views as a positive outcome.
