James McClean was celebrated by Wrexham fans as he stepped onto the pitch prior to the match against Leicester City. The midfielder was present to bid farewell following his agreement to depart the club in the January transfer window.

After three years at Wrexham, owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, McClean is set to return to Derry City. The 36-year-old appreciated the applause from the home supporters and even playfully acknowledged the Leicester fans by raising both middle fingers towards them.

He has already shared a heartfelt farewell message on social media, stating that his time at Wrexham has been “the most incredible and enjoyable couple of years I have had.” His wife, Erin, expressed the couple’s excitement about returning home during an interview with BBC Radio Foyle’s North West Today program. “It’s a mixture of emotions; we are so excited to get home. It’s something we’ve always wanted to do. We’ve built a life here for 15 years and made great friends, so while we are sad, we are also excited. Wearing the Derry top again and experiencing these moments together fills us with joy. Knowing that we won’t miss family weddings and gatherings anymore means the world to us.”

Reflecting on his tenure at Wrexham, McClean conveyed pride in his accomplishments. In a statement to the club’s media, he remarked, “I think the message back then was that nothing is guaranteed in life. But I can assure you that I’ve given everything for the cause, and I hope the fans recognize that I’ve done so with passion and care. I deeply care about this club. Leaving after a few seasons and achieving promotion is something I will always be proud of, and I believe this club has the potential to achieve great things.”

Co-owner Rob McElhenney also offered an emotional farewell to McClean on Instagram, stating, “I have been trying to find the words to explain what James McClean means to me…but words don’t exist for this. So for now, I’ll just say: Thank you, Jimmy. For everything.”
