Jess Fishlock Signs One-Year Contract Extension with Seattle Reign FC

Fishlock has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep her with the Reign through 2026, marking an impressive tenure of nearly 14 years in Seattle.

Reflecting on her career, Fishlock shared with ESPN, “When I came back from the Euros, I felt a shift in my aspirations. I remain a fierce competitor, and that passion will always be with me. Despite the years gone by, I am determined to bring a championship to Seattle.”

As the only player in the NWSL still active with her original team since the league’s launch in 2013, Fishlock’s legacy is significant. Her long-time teammate, Lauren Barnes, also dedicated her career to Seattle until her retirement at the end of the 2025 season, following the Reign’s quarterfinal exit against the Orlando Pride.

Other notable players from the inaugural season include Chicago Stars goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and Angel City forward Sydney Leroux, though both have played for multiple teams. While Naeher is currently without a contract for the upcoming season, Leroux took a mental health leave in 2025 and did not play.

Fishlock’s contributions have been integral to the Reign’s success, particularly during their NWSL Shield-winning seasons in 2014 and 2015. She was named NWSL MVP in 2021 and has made the league’s Best XI seven times, accumulating 48 goals and 30 assists—making her the club’s all-time leader in goal contributions.

Set to turn 39 in January, Fishlock led the Reign in scoring during the 2025 season with six goals and two assists. She expressed a renewed sense of joy at the start of the 2025 season, particularly as the club welcomed a new generation of young talent alongside fresh ownership.

“For me, it’s always been about my body,” Fishlock stated. “My tactical acumen and football knowledge are enduring, but the question is whether my body can keep pace with my mind. So far, it has.”

The Reign organization has supported her in managing her fitness and allowing her the necessary time to recover, a testament to the strong relationships she has built in Seattle.

“A one-year deal suits me well as it allows for continual evaluation of my physical condition,” Fishlock noted.

Reign head coach Laura Harvey praised Fishlock, saying, “Jess possesses a level of understanding of the game that few can match, thanks to her extensive experience. Fishlock announced her retirement from international play last month, following an outstanding performance that led Wales to the final stage of the Women’s European Championship for the first time in 2025. She made history by scoring Wales’ first-ever goal in the competition, becoming the oldest goalscorer in Women’s Euro history.

Despite her retirement from the national team, Fishlock is eager to focus solely on her club career, a first in her professional journey. She has experienced both highs and lows with Seattle—three NWSL Shields and three championship match losses—while witnessing the team’s evolution, including relocations and changes in ownership and branding.

Her deep connection to the club fuels Fishlock’s ambition. “Winning a trophy with another team wouldn’t hold the same significance for me as doing so with Seattle, where I have built my entire career alongside loyal fans,” she remarked. “The journey we’ve shared, navigating both challenges and triumphs, enhances the value of our achievements and deepens my commitment to this team.”
