The Board of Directors of Real Betis Balompié convened this afternoon and officially appointed Joaquín Sánchez as a new member by co-optation. This appointment is subject to ratification by the shareholders during the upcoming General Assembly, scheduled for mid-December. With this decision, the historic captain of the club and stakeholder now becomes part of the club’s governing body. Since his retirement in 2023, Joaquín Sánchez has expressed a desire to contribute his extensive experience and knowledge to Real Betis after more than two decades at the pinnacle of professional football. Over the past two seasons, he has undertaken both institutional and sporting roles, serving as an advisor to the Sports Management team alongside Manu Fajardo and his colleagues. Following this period, the former captain has accepted the responsibility of joining the Board of Directors, which will allow him to enhance the work he has been involved in during these seasons, with a direct connection to the sporting sector. Joaquín is regarded as one of the most significant players in the history of Betis, having won the Copa del Rey twice, in 2005 and 2022. He holds the record for the most appearances in the iconic Verdiblanco kit, surpassing legends such as José Ramón Esnaola, Julio Cardeñosa, and Rafael Gordillo. Throughout his career, Joaquín, who also played for Valencia, Málaga, and Fiorentina, as well as the Spanish national team, participated in 528 matches with the first team of Real Betis, spanning two periods: the first from 2000 to 2006, and the second from 2015 to 2023. He now embarks on a new chapter within the governance structure of the club, assuming responsibilities related to the sporting department.
