omidbasir- Jon Gorrotxategi expresses great enjoyment during his inaugural year with Real Sociedad in La Liga. His experience has been further enhanced by being the third most utilized outfield player, despite starting the season with a minor injury. The Eibar native acknowledges the invaluable support from Sergio Francisco and anticipates a similar trust from the new coach, Pellegrino Matarazzo, as they prepare for the upcoming derby.

Even with an injury at the start of the season, Gorrotxategi has accumulated significant playing time, and he discussed this achievement. He remarked, “I believe I am thoroughly enjoying this first year. I am grateful to Sergio for the trust and minutes he has afforded me. Now, under the new coach, we are embarking on a fresh path, and I am very pleased with him. I am gaining confidence, enjoying the style of play we are implementing, and striving to work harder for more minutes.”

Gorrotxategi faces competition from teammates, including Turrientes, who has capitalized on Gorrotxategi’s absence due to injury to secure a starting position. “I was thrilled for the performance he delivered. I have known him for many years and understand his capabilities and potential, so it did not surprise me at all. Ultimately, this healthy competition is beneficial as it pushes us to excel further.”

In a recent match against Celta, Gorrotxategi and Turrientes played together for the first time in the top tier due to Soler’s suspension, and the duo proved successful. He noted, “I believe that pairing strengthens the team, as we are more compact and facilitate smoother ball distribution. Being closer together in midfield has been highly beneficial for us.”

As the derby approaches, Gorrotxategi was reminded that he scored the winning goal in the reverse fixture. “That was a very special day, and I often replay it in my mind. People remind me of it on the street, and if it were to happen again, I certainly wouldn’t complain. Whether this match is perceived as more important here or there is uncertain, but it is special for both teams, and we will both place significant emphasis on it.”

Gorrotxategi acknowledges that Real Sociedad may enter the match with greater stamina, given that Athletic Club is preoccupied with their Champions League match. Yet, he recognizes the potential for the latter to gain moral support from their performance. “It’s true that we might be fresher due to their Champions League game today, but it could be a monumental occasion for them, as they could achieve qualification, which would boost their confidence going into the derby. Therefore, I am uncertain who will be in a better position.”
