Jose Mourinho achieved remarkable success in his debut season at Chelsea, leading the team to a Premier League title, which they successfully defended under his guidance. His leadership established Chelsea as one of the premier football clubs in both England and Europe. Upon returning to the club for a second term in 2013, Mourinho led Chelsea to their third Premier League title in the 2014-15 season.

However, Mourinho’s career has been marked by controversy, characterized by several explosive incidents both at Chelsea and other clubs. Notably, he was involved in a confrontation with Tito Vilanova during his time at Real Madrid, where he infamously poked Vilanova in the eye amid their fierce rivalry with Barcelona. More recently, while managing Fenerbahce, he was observed grabbing the nose of Galatasaray head coach Okan Buruk.

Former Chelsea player Shaun Wright-Phillips shared a memorable incident involving Mourinho during their time together at Stamford Bridge. After a disappointing first half in a match, Wright-Phillips recounted how the team was gathered in the dressing room, waiting for Mourinho, who had retreated to his office. Suddenly, he burst into the room and executed a fly-kick on the table, sending drinks flying everywhere.

Wright-Phillips, still adapting to the environment, recalled his astonishment at the outburst. “I just looked on because I was still new at the club. I’m like, ‘What just happened?’” He appreciated Mourinho’s passionate approach, stating, “I quite like that though. I like that from a manager. Because he’s showing us he cares. I’d rather have a manager like that than one who is quiet and talks behind your back.”

The former winger also recounted a more humorous incident in a match against Fulham when both he and teammate Joe Cole were substituted within the first half hour. Although he felt they hadn’t played poorly, Mourinho’s decision left both players in disbelief. Wright-Phillips shared, “I was laughing out of like, ‘I can’t believe this just happened.’ Cole was raging. But I had a little snigger, a chuckle, because I’m like, ‘It’s hurting me, but I’ve just got to hold this one.’”

Following his departure from Manchester City for the second time in 2011, Wright-Phillips returned to London to join QPR and later moved to the United States to play for the New York Red Bulls before retiring in 2017.

Currently, Mourinho faces challenges at Benfica after succeeding Bruno Lage at the Estadio da Luz. The team has struggled, with three losses in their last four competitive matches, leaving them ten points behind league leaders Porto.
