Karim Adeyemi, the Borussia Dortmund and German national team forward, has released a public statement addressing his recent conviction on illegal weapons charges. In comments made by DFB president Rudi Völler regarding the matter, it was revealed that Adeyemi claimed to have unknowingly ordered a ‘mystery box’ online.

In his statement, Adeyemi remarked, “At the beginning of 2024, out of carelessness and without fully considering the implications, I ordered a so-called ‘mystery box’ on the internet. Months later, the package was delivered and remained unopened at the police station. This was a significant mistake, one that I deeply regret and that has cost me a great deal.”

Adeyemi emphasized his awareness of his public persona, stating, “I know that I am in the public eye and must serve as a role model. I did not meet that standard. It pains me even more to realize that I acted so recklessly. I have learned a great deal from this experience, and I promise to avoid such mistakes in the future. I am grateful to those who continue to trust and support me.”

Völler quickly clarified that Adeyemi’s actions were not connected to his responsibilities with the German national team. BVB sporting director Lars Ricken echoed this sentiment in his own statement released on Wednesday. Völler noted that having already faced a stern reprimand and incurred legal fines, Adeyemi would not face any additional sanctions from the DFB.

Both Ricken and Völler have confirmed that no further fines would be imposed. Instead, Adeyemi will participate in community service through scheduled visits to a local charity focused on youth education.

Ricken expressed, “We took this matter very seriously, and Karim regrets his mistake. It is important to note that he has already paid a significant fine, no individuals were harmed, and he does not have a criminal record. We trust that he will adhere to his promises.”
