Kazuyoshi Miura, the world’s oldest professional footballer, has signed a loan agreement with Japanese third division club Fukushima United, set to last until June. This move marks a significant opportunity for Miura, who could play in the J.League—the top three divisions of Japanese football—for the first time in five years.

The former Japan striker, who began his career with the Brazilian club Santos in 1986, faced challenges last season, failing to score in 69 minutes over seven appearances while on loan at fourth-tier club Atletico Suzuka. As he prepares for his 41st season as a professional footballer, Miura expressed his unwavering passion for the sport. “My passion for football hasn’t changed, no matter how old I get,” he remarked. “I’m very grateful to be given this opportunity. I promise I will play with everything I have to make a contribution. Let’s make history together!”

Affectionately known as ‘King Kazu’ in Japan, this represents Miura’s fourth loan since 2022 from J2 League side Yokohama FC. Over the years, he has played club football in Italy, Croatia, and Australia. Miura signed with Yokohama FC in 2005 but has not taken the field for them since 2020.

Throughout his international career, which concluded in 2000, Miura scored 55 goals in 89 appearances. His career notably includes a missed selection for Japan’s first World Cup finals appearance in 1998. Now, at 59, Miura has expressed his desire to continue playing until he is 60, embracing a ‘new challenge’ after being relegated to Japan’s regional leagues last season. Fukushima United finished 10th in the 20-team third division last year.
