Keira Barry Joins Bay FC A Promising Move for the Young ForwardKeira Barry Joins Bay FC A Promising Move for the Young Forward

Barry’s transfer was confirmed on Wednesday, following her recall from a loan spell at Sunderland in WSL 2 last December. This marked her second temporary move since signing her first professional contract with Manchester United ahead of the 2023-24 season. The young forward was previously part of the Crystal Palace team that achieved promotion as second-tier champions in 2024. However, first-team opportunities at Manchester have been limited, prompting Barry to seek a fresh start with Bay FC, where she has signed a four-year contract.

Upon the announcement of her transfer, Barry shared, “When the opportunity to join Bay FC arose, it immediately felt like the right decision. After discussing with Emma and meeting [sporting director] Matt Potter and the staff, it became clear that the club’s values, ambition, and culture matched my aspirations at this point in my career. I’m excited for the challenge of playing in a new league, testing myself against top players, and experiencing life in the U.S. I believe this is the perfect environment to further develop my game, and I look forward to showcasing my abilities to the Bay FC fans.”

Barry is familiar with Coates from their time together within the England youth setup. Coates’s experience with youth national teams spans eight years before her move to the U.S. was announced at the end of 2025, highlighting her understanding of players like Barry.

“Having worked closely with Keira in England, I can attest to her relentless energy and technical skill,” Coates remarked. “She is a courageous, forward-thinking winger who isn’t afraid to take on opponents and generate opportunities. Keira possesses a professional pedigree that aligns seamlessly with the culture we are building here. We aspire to be a team that attacks with variety, speed, and intent, and Keira embodies that ‘front-foot’ mentality.”

This transfer follows another significant move, as talented young English player Anouk Denton announced her joining of Coates’ Bay FC project earlier in the week. Denton, who is two years Barry’s senior, has taken a different path to Bay FC, having gained regular WSL experience at West Ham for three years and earning her senior Lionesses debut in December. Many England players have previously sought the opportunity to experience a different league and lifestyle in the NWSL, with Denton expressing her enthusiasm about competing in “the most competitive league in the world.”

Given Coates’ extensive familiarity with young English talent and the relationships she has cultivated during her time with youth national teams, it will be intriguing to see if more players choose to cross the Atlantic to join her, either this year or in the future.

Barry is Bay FC’s fourth acquisition of the off-season, with a clear emphasis on youth demonstrated in the club’s recent signings. Brooklyn Courtnall has returned permanently after a loan spell from North Carolina Courage, while 18-year-old Alex Pfeiffer, who joined Kansas City Current in 2023, has signed a three-year deal. Both Denton and Barry have followed suit, relocating to the Bay Area this week.

This focus on youth development is not surprising, given Coates’ seven-year background in youth football and her proven ability to nurture young talent. She will be hopeful that this strategy will enable Bay FC to progress in 2026, especially after the team narrowly missed out on the NWSL playoffs in 2025.
