Keko Gontán, a globetrotting footballer and the youngest debutant for Atlético de Madrid, recently shared an amusing anecdote during the ‘Offsiders’ podcast, recalling his experiences at Cartagena.

He described what he deemed a “brilliant idea,” referring to the coaching method of Juan Ignacio Martínez, a relative of José Bordalás, particularly in the context of utilizing video analysis to scout opponents.

“It was in 2010 when we first started using video analysis. We had to request the footage from La Sexta to conduct our assessments. Martínez, who had a strong understanding of psychology, recognized that players tend to lose focus every three to four minutes. To recapture their attention, he would show three seconds of a pornographic video, and we would all be like meerkats, eagerly anticipating the next clip,” he recollected with a laugh. “He did this every four or five minutes, and we were all waiting, saying, ‘It’s coming! It’s coming!’

Keko concluded by praising Juan Ignacio Martínez, with whom he developed as a footballer: “He is truly remarkable; it was a brilliant idea. It was just a two or three-second clip. I haven’t seen anything like it since, but it was an ingenious approach.”
