Key Contract Decisions Ahead for Real Sociedad’s Goalkeepers

The year 2026 marks a critical juncture for the future of Real Sociedad’s goalkeeping position, as both Álex Remiro and Unai Marrero have contracts that expire on June 30, 2027. The txuriurdin club must secure the renewal of at least one goalkeeper to avoid the risk of losing both, who have been part of the squad for the past three seasons, without any return.

Álex Remiro joined Real Sociedad in 2019 on a free transfer after not renewing his contract with Athletic Bilbao. Originally signed until 2023, he extended his contract in 2022 to remain until 2027. His impressive performances, including earning a spot on the national team, have heightened his profile, leading to speculation linking him with several prominent clubs over the last two summers. However, he remains at San Sebastián, with no developments regarding his contract status.

Remiro’s initial partner was Miguel Ángel Moyá, followed by Mathew Ryan and Andoni Zubiaurre. Since 2023, Unai Marrero has served as his backup in LaLiga, the Champions League, and the Europa League, showcasing his skills in the Copa del Rey and demonstrating his potential as a future starting goalkeeper for the club, nearly 20 years after the last homegrown keeper took on the role.

To secure his future, Remiro should consider renewing the contract he initially signed upon joining the club, as it has remained unchanged since then. Last summer, interest from other teams for a loan deal emerged, but the club views him as a key fixture alongside Marrero.

Real Sociedad’s only player with an expiring contract this upcoming June 30 is Aritz Elustondo, in addition to the loaned Caleta-Car. The club recognizes the urgency of renewing contracts for both Remiro and Marrero, alongside other players like Aihen and Jon Karrikaburu, who may leave during the winter transfer window, as well as Carlos Fernández, currently on loan at Mirandés.
