Köln’s head coach Lukas Kwasniok is currently facing significant pressure following a disappointing run of seven consecutive matches without a win. The team’s recent 2-2 draw against Heidenheim marked the continuation of this winless streak, with their last Bundesliga victory occurring against fellow promoted side Hamburger SV at the start of November. This situation raises several legitimate concerns.

The 44-year-old Kwasniok has adopted various unconventional approaches, including notable sideline attire and metaphor-laden press conference speeches, but these tactics are beginning to wear thin. Observers have drawn comparisons to former coach Steffen Baumgart’s unique style in similar situations.

Despite his ability to engage in creative public relations efforts, Kwasniok increasingly appears to be struggling with his role as a coach. This was evident when traveling Köln fans displayed a “Kwasni-Yok” banner during the match, with “Yok” translating to “out” in German youth slang. After the latest draw, Kwasniok found himself on the defensive, offering unsatisfactory responses to tough questions regarding his player selections and the banner’s implications.

Kwasniok’s challenges are set to intensify as Köln prepares to face Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on Wednesday. Bayern demonstrated their capacity to exploit weaknesses in their previous match, making it clear that any errors could be severely punished.

In a surprising move, Kwasniok placed new loan signing Jahmai Simpson-Pusey directly into the starting lineup, despite acknowledging that the young Englishman speaks no German, has had minimal training, and is unfamiliar with most of the team. Additionally, the coach opted to leave Cenk Özkacar on the bench, which raised eyebrows given the team’s depleted center-back options.

Eric Martel and Sebastian Sebulonsen were shifted into the back three, while other unexpected starters included Sebastian Sebulonsen and Denis Huseinbasic. Notably, Said El Mala began the match on the bench, and Luca Waldschmidt was absent from the squad for unspecified internal reasons. In a surprise twist, 18-year-old striker Fynn Schenten made his debut in a crucial attacking role.

Isak Bergmann Johannesson remained unused on the bench, and Florian Kainz did not feature in the matchday selection. Despite the questioning decisions, some of Kwasniok’s strategic moves yielded positive results, as Castro-Montes notched two assists, and El Mala quickly equalized after being substituted in for Huseinbasic.

During the post-match press conference, Kwasniok acknowledged the difficulty of his choices, stating, “These are tough decisions, but it’s also my job to promote young players and generate market value. I saw good spirit and attitude from many players under 30, which is why I’m satisfied. Sometimes better is possible, and good is not good enough.”

Regarding El Mala, Kwasniok expressed, “He’s better as a substitute and a game-changer. He’s among the best in the Bundesliga at that. When he starts, he tends to exert himself too much, which affects his performance.”

Kwasniok, known for his lengthy responses, seemed to struggle with the pressure and opted for brevity toward the end of the presser. When asked about the fan banner, he stated, “I was informed about it. I have no idea why they did that. I will seek to establish communication with the supporters regarding this matter.

“I must focus on performance and points moving forward. That’s just Köln for you—everything here is more intense and demanding. The most important factor is how the lads are performing on the pitch.

“I observed unity today, which applies to both the team and the coaching staff. That’s within my control. Now, we’ll see if we can make things challenging for Bayern on Wednesday.”
