Kobbie Mainoo s Revival at Manchester United Under Michael CarrickKobbie Mainoo s Revival at Manchester United Under Michael Carrick

Kobbie Mainoo, a product of Manchester United’s illustrious academy, found himself sidelined under former manager Ruben Amorim. During the 2025-26 season, he made only one appearance—a disappointing Carabao Cup loss to League Two side Grimsby Town—before Amorim was dismissed from his position.

Prior to the January transfer window, there were speculations regarding a potential move for Mainoo, with multiple clubs across Europe, including Serie A champions Napoli, reportedly interested in providing him with the playing time vital for his development.

Following Amorim’s exit, the reins at Manchester United were handed over to interim manager Michael Carrick, who has reintegrated Mainoo into the squad. Mainoo marked his return with a full 90-minute performance in an impressive 2-0 derby victory against arch-rivals Manchester City.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United is now “prepared to return to contract talks” with Mainoo. Discussions about a potential departure have been put on hold, as the club aims to secure the future of this home-grown talent in Manchester.

It has been reported that a new contract for Mainoo was agreed upon last year, although Amorim declined to approve it. Currently, Mainoo has 18 months remaining on his contract, which includes an option for an additional year through 2028.

Amorim frequently faced questions about his management of Mainoo, with many fans surprised by his decision to overlook such an exciting talent. The midfielder’s brother, Jordan, even wore a t-shirt to matches proclaiming “Free Kobbie Mainoo.”

Mainoo has found favor once again under Carrick, who has publicly expressed his admiration for the young midfielder. In a conversation with former teammate Rio Ferdinand in September 2025, Carrick remarked, “For a club to have a player that’s come through the academy and knows it, Man United’s got to have an element of that. Always has done, always should do.”

Carrick emphasized the importance of players like Mainoo, noting, “To have a talent like that, as he’s shown already, you’ve got to have players like that. They get it, they know it; let’s build around them. There’s definitely a place for him here.”

When asked about Mainoo’s position, as there were questions about whether he fits as a No.6 or No.8, Carrick clarified, “He’s more of an attacker. I don’t see him as a holding midfielder. He needs a little bit more freedom to create. I think he’s got a massive future ahead; he just needs some patience and a break.”

During the match against City, Mainoo adopted a deeper role, which allowed club captain Bruno Fernandes to advance and influence the game as a playmaking No.10. With Casemiro set to depart at the end of the season, Manchester United will require reinforcements in that area.

Casemiro’s contract is nearing its expiration, and he will leave as a free agent in the summer, with interest from MLS and the Saudi Pro League already reported. Additionally, there are concerns about Bruno Fernandes’ future, as he too has attracted interest from clubs in the Middle East. Retaining Mainoo’s services is becoming increasingly crucial for the club.
