Kylian Mbapp and Teammates Bid Farewell to Xabi AlonsoKylian Mbapp and Teammates Bid Farewell to Xabi Alonso

Kylian Mbappé has paid tribute to Xabi Alonso following the latter’s departure from Real Madrid after less than eight months in charge.

The French star is among several Madrid players who have expressed their gratitude to the former Liverpool midfielder on social media since the announcement of Alonso’s exit and the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa, the coach of Madrid’s reserves, as his successor.

Mbappé, who featured in 24 matches under Alonso this season, shared a photograph of the two on his Instagram account, stating: “It’s been short but a pleasure to play for you and learn from you. Thank you for giving me the confidence from Day 1. I will remember you as a manager who had clear ideas and a deep understanding of football. Best of luck in your next chapter.”

Brazilian striker Rodrygo also expressed his gratitude to Alonso, writing: “Coach, thank you for every day we’ve shared, for the trust, the learning, and the moments we’ve experienced. I wish you much success on your future path. May your career continue to flourish! All the best always.”

Other Madrid players, including Thibaut Courtois, Antonio Rüdiger, and Dani Carvajal, have also thanked Alonso on social media.

However, Vinícius Júnior and Jude Bellingham have yet to comment on Alonso’s departure. Alonso’s relationship with Vinícius had become increasingly strained after the Brazilian reacted negatively to being substituted in the Clásico against Barcelona in October, resulting in Vinícius being omitted from the starting lineup several times, further complicating their rapport.

Despite some dissent within the squad regarding Alonso’s performance, Real Madrid’s official statement indicated that the decision to part ways was made by “mutual agreement.” However, various sources have reported that it was, in fact, a dismissal.

The decision to let Alonso go came on the heels of a 3-2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia, with sources highlighting his management of the Vinícius situation, lackluster performances, and disappointing results as contributing factors.

Alonso had faced pressure before Christmas after a challenging run that saw the team secure only two wins in eight matches, including defeats to Liverpool, Celta Vigo, and Manchester City. Although team performance had improved recently with five victories prior to Sunday’s loss, Real Madrid now finds itself four points behind LaLiga leaders Barcelona.
