Los Angeles FC (LAFC) has officially signed Canadian midfielder Stephen Eustáquio from FC Porto on an initial loan arrangement that will last until June 30. The deal includes an option to make the transfer permanent.

The Major League Soccer (MLS) club announced the acquisition on Friday, revealing that they have also transferred $50,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) to the San Jose Earthquakes in order to obtain Eustáquio’s discovery rights.

John Thorrington, LAFC’s co-president and general manager, expressed enthusiasm about the signing, stating, “Stephen is a top-class midfielder with extensive international experience who knows what it takes to win and lead at the highest level. We are excited to add a player of his quality, and we are confident he will have an immediate, positive impact on the group both on and off the field.”

Eustáquio has been a key figure for FC Porto since his arrival at the club in 2022, having participated in the UEFA Champions League, the Europa League, and the FIFA Club World Cup last summer.

Despite his contributions, the 29-year-old has struggled to secure regular playing time this season. This loan move presents an opportunity for him to regain his match sharpness in preparation for Canada’s co-hosting of the World Cup this summer.

After previously representing Portugal at the Under-21 level, Eustáquio has since earned 54 caps and scored four goals for Canada’s senior national team.
