LaLiga Affirms Its Authority Over Match Scheduling and SuspensionsLaLiga Affirms Its Authority Over Match Scheduling and Suspensions

On Sunday, LaLiga issued a statement regarding the suspension of the Rayo Vallecano-Oviedo match, emphasizing that the organization of professional competitions—including decisions on dates, times, suspensions, and rescheduling—”legally belongs” to the “professional leagues as organizers of the competition.”

In a communiqué, the entity led by Javier Tebas reminded that the organizational decisions for the National League Championship of the First and Second Divisions fall under LaLiga’s jurisdiction, notwithstanding the coordination role performed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

In this context, the National Court annulled several sections of Article 56 of the RFEF Statutes last December, which had granted its bodies the power to suspend or modify matches and set unified schedules, thereby reaffirming LaLiga’s authority in the competitions it manages.

Real Oviedo formally requested the RFEF on Sunday to award them a win for the match against Rayo Vallecano, which was postponed on Saturday by LaLiga due to the poor condition of the pitch at Vallecas Stadium. The blue club made this request “due to non-compliance with federal regulations by LaLiga and Rayo Vallecano,” as stated in a communication sent to the media.

LaLiga reiterated that any incidents must be resolved in accordance with the “applicable regulations, ensuring legal security, competitive equality, and compliance with legal obligations concerning the safety and health of participants and the public.”

The match between Rayo Vallecano and Oviedo, corresponding to matchday 23 of LaLiga EA Sports, was suspended on Saturday because “at this time, the playing surface (of Vallecas Stadium) does not meet the necessary guarantees for the safe holding of the match,” as LaLiga stated in its announcement.

Upon receiving this news, Real Oviedo expressed its dissatisfaction with the match’s postponement, characterizing the situation as “shameful,” and announced that it would take “all necessary regulatory actions.”
