LaLiga Awards Broadcast Rights to Movistar and DAZN for EA Sports MatchesLaLiga Awards Broadcast Rights to Movistar and DAZN for EA Sports Matches

LaLiga has officially granted Movistar and DAZN the audiovisual rights to broadcast EA Sports League matches over a duration of five seasons, from 2027-2028 to 2031-2032. The bidding process concluded on Friday, at which point the offers were opened at the headquarters of the CSD. Subsequently, LaLiga’s governing body evaluated the proposals based on their potential profitability for the clubs involved. According to information from MARCA, the agreement has been finalized with a notable increase, exceeding €1 billion per season. In contrast, the previous tender was valued at €990 million per season. Overall, the contract totals €5.25 billion for EA Sports League matches for residential customers, compared to €4.95 billion from the prior bidding process.

This figure represents a 6% increase over the €4.95 billion from the previous tender. When factoring in an additional €650 million from the HORECA sector, €175 million from LaLiga Hypermotion, and €60 million from open rights and highlights, the total surpasses €6.135 billion, indicating a 9% increase from the previous period. This agreement is historic, especially given the introduction of the new Champions League format, which offers more matches and increases competition for national leagues in selling their broadcasting rights. Notably, the previous tender only saw a 1% growth. LaLiga believes that the five-year duration of the offers provides greater medium-term stability and fosters increased certainty for the rights holders to invest in content.

It is important to note that until the conclusion of the current tender in the 2026-2027 season, the existing rights holders are Movistar, which broadcasts five matches per matchday plus three full matchdays, and DAZN, which also broadcasts five matches per matchday. The new format will maintain this division of five matches each but will eliminate Movistar’s exclusivity over three matchdays. Each rights holder will broadcast five matches per matchday throughout the entire season.

The decision was made by the television control board, which includes representatives from Real Madrid, Atlético, Barcelona, and Osasuna within LaLiga EA Sports. Atlético congratulated LaLiga on the agreement, viewing it as a means to provide stability and visibility for Spanish football, while Real Madrid opposed the decision and expressed similar sentiments. The remaining votes were in favor.

Revenue from audiovisual rights constitutes the largest source of income for the majority of LaLiga clubs, with some clubs relying on it for up to 80% of their total earnings.
